Chemical and Laboratory Safety Christopher Weber Consultations Research safety offers consultations to help laboratory personnel identify and find solutions for many common lab safety issues. We will work with labs to customize programs based on the unique hazards and limitations of the lab space. Radiation Safety Rules and Regulations Konstantin Povod v Radioactive Material (RAM) and X-ray use in research must be reviewed and approved by the Clemson Radiation Safety Committee. v X-ray equipment must be registered with DHEC. v Class 3 B and 4 laser equipment has to be registered with the Office of Research Safety. v Required training: • RAM: Initial classroom, annual refresher online. • X-ray: online or classroom for users, classroom for Responsible Investigators(RI • Laser: online, provided by Kentek, paid for by the Office of Research Safety.
Radiation Safety Services v Classroom training for new RAM users in the beginning of each semester. v Semiannual inspections of RAM and annual of X-ray projects. v RAM receipt and distribution, RAM inventory. v Weekly radiation contamination surveys. v Waste collection and disposal, Decay-in-Storage (DIS), mixed waste. v Personnel dosimetry, radiation detector calibrations. v Sealed sources inventory and leak test.

Research Safety Incident Reports Complete and submit online incident investigation
Incidents • Architecture Center: Student lost tips of 3 fingers when using guarded jointer • Cook Lab: Student had shirt pulled into operating lathe. No injuries • Various Lab Areas: Chemicals in eye. Not wearing safety glasses or goggles or wrong type of eye protection. • Mechanical Engineering: Face Laceration. Not wearing face shield when operating grinder, wrong tool for the job
Lithium Battery Fire What happened • Lithium batteries being used in a CI robot began hissing & caught fire • Student supervisor moved other students from area when he heard the hissing • Fire extinguisher used to put out fire (He was trained) • No injury or damage (except to robot) Cause & Action • Batteries were old and the team was getting an error during charging for one pack • Replace all batteries • Improve storage • CCIT recorded video that confirmed training with quick action essential. • Students made aware of hazards of batteries
What is a Near Miss? A near miss could be the next accident Near misses are incidents or events that could have resulted in injuries or other adverse consequences, but fortunately did not.

APP • Collaboration with Creative Inquiry • Easy way to report near misses • Share best practices across all campus locations • Encourages collaboration among peers • In the future Reward program for those reporting • Develop database to track near misses and identify trends. • Report info to DSCs
