Fires Fires There are 3 DONTS about fire
Fires
Fires There are 3 DON’TS about fire: 1. Don’t light a fire when the Forest Rating forbids it. 2. Don’t light a fire when there are strong winds. 3. Don’t build a fire that is bigger than needed.
Fires Where to build your fire: 1. Sheltered from wind – wind can carry sparks 2. Away from tree overhang – heat & sparks can light boughs 3. Away from roots – fire can travel up roots to tree 4. Clear area around fire pit – no leaves around (bare ground) 5. Keep it close to the shelter – keep warm but not burn
Fire Triangle Spark Oxygen Fuel If 1 of the 3 pieces are missing then you will not be able to make fire.
Fires There are 3 types of fuel: 1. Tinder: - lights easily - small pieces (ex. birch bark, dryer lint, Irish moss)
Fires There are 3 types of fuel: 2. Kindling: - also lights easily - medium pieces (2 -3 times > tinder) (ex. wood chips, small twigs)
Fires There are 3 types of fuel: 3. Fuel: - anything that burns - large pieces (2 -3 times > kindling) (ex. sticks, logs)
Fires There are many ways to generate spark: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Matches & lighters Flint & steel Magnifying glass Steel wool & battery Drills (hand & bow)
Fires There are 3 types of fires you can build: 1. Warmth/Comfort - uses little fuel - burns slowly - best type is a teepee style
Fires 2. Cooking - uses lots of fuel - burns quickly & hotter - best type is a log-cabin style
Fires 3. Signal - all fires are essentially signal fires (day = smoke, night = flame) - you must continually add fuel to keep signal going
