Presenter Scott Magers has over 36 years in the fire service. He is currently the Fire Chief of the Hillsboro Fire Department, in Hillsboro Oregon. He is an NFPA Fire Officer 4 and a graduate of the National Fire Academy. Qualities of Good Leaders • Surround yourself with good people or help the people you have be better. • They are not the most important person on the team! • Your rank is a title, not a definition of who you are as a person. • Realistically promise, over deliver! • Check you ego at the door! Qualities of Good Leaders • Provide a Vision and Direction! • Support your people they matter the most, but hold them accountable. – If you take care of them, the will take care of you. • Teaching and supporting will always be better than discipline. • The team gets the wins, you get the loses! • Sometimes its better to ask forgiveness than permission! You want your people to take your job when your done with it. • Do not let the nay Sayers stand in your way. • Follow the 40/70 rule • Recognize that when the hair on the back of their neck stands up it means something.
