Stage 1 Registration
Stage 2 BSQ and SJT Behavioural Styles Questionnaire - Values based assessment tool, relating to important competencies of the role
Stage 2 BSQ and SJT Situational Judgement Test - Realistic scenarios which you may be faced with as a firefighter, four different options available and you have to make a judgement on how effective each option would be
Stage 3 Ability Tests • There will be 3 separate timed tests • Make sure that you read the instructions before completing the test – the Information Booklet has more information about the tests • If you have a disability e. g. a dyslexia diagnosis and need reasonable adjustments let us know ASAP
Stage 3 Numerical Reasoning Numerical reasoning evaluates your ability to work with, understand draw logical conclusions from numerical data, presented in an infographic
Stage 3 Verbal Reasoning Verbal reasoning evaluates your ability to understand, interpret and draw logical conclusion from written information
Stage 3 Mechanical reasoning evaluates your ability to apply cognitive reasoning to mechanical, physical and practical concepts in order to solve related problems

Preparation • It is recommended to have the minimum level of cardiorespiratory fitness for UK firefighting if you can: – Run 1. 5 miles (2. 4 kilometres) continuously in 12 minutes or less – Run on a treadmill at 7. 5 mph (12 km/h) for 12 minutes. – Perform the multi-stage shuttle run test (bleep test) to at least level 8 shuttle 8. • It is recommended to have the minimum physical strength and muscular endurance if you can: – Shoulder press 25 kg once in an overhead, upright seated position
Stage 5 Interviews • Competency based interviews • Explore how you have used specific skills in your previous roles (paid or voluntary) • For example: – Tell me about a time when you have assisted in your community to achieve a goal
Stage 6 Medical & fitness tests • Hearing test • Lung function • Eye test • Grip strength • Blood pressure • Drug and alcohol test • VO 2 MAX • Historic and current health conditions • Fitness tests varies from Service to Service
Stage 7 Pre-employment Checks • Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) • References – at least 3 continuous years (including gaps in employment) • Right to Work • DBS Check
Our Trainee Course • Opportunities available from April 2020 • 14 weeks in duration • Includes various modules to nationally accredited level
Life at Tyne & Wear • Allocated to a watch/shift at a location • Works 2 days, 2 nights, 4 rest days • Trainee to competent minimum 3 years Role Annual salary Trainee £ 23, 366 Development £ 24, 339 Competent £ 31, 144
