FIRE SAFETY QUARTERLY STAFF TRAINING

FIRE SAFETY • POLICY – All personnel at the Ambulatory Surgical Facility are responsible

FIRE SAFETY • POLICY – All personnel at the Ambulatory Surgical Facility are responsible for knowing the evacuation procedure and method for activating the fire alarm system – The Nurse Manager and OR staff are responsible for coordination of activities in the event of any fire emergency – All personnel are responsible for providing for patient safety as the first priority

FIRE SAFETY • PROCEDURE – In the event of a fire at the Ambulatory

FIRE SAFETY • PROCEDURE – In the event of a fire at the Ambulatory Surgical Center, the fire plan will be activated, “Code Red” will be announced and the location will be given – No operative procedures will be started after the fire is announced. – Surgeons and Anesthesiologist with cases in progress will be informed of the situation and asked to complete the procedure as quickly as possible

FIRE SAFETY • PROCEDURE – If evacuation becomes necessary, the patient will be stabilized

FIRE SAFETY • PROCEDURE – If evacuation becomes necessary, the patient will be stabilized medically and surgically, then moved as quickly as possible to the closest safe area and recovered at that location

FIRE SAFETY • RACE – The proper response to fire or smoke is RACE • R=Rescue patients immediately from the fire or smoke area • A=Pull fire alarm station and call emergency number give exact location of the fire • C=Contain the smoke or fire by closing all doors to rooms and corridors • E=Extinguish the fire (when safe to do so) Always rescue people before pulling the fire alarm

FIRE SAFETY • Staff assignments/responsibilities in case of a fire: – Turn on all corridor lights – Monitor telephone, emergency calls and relay messages – Close all room doors – Make a current list of all patients in the facility to ensure all are accounted for in the event of a fire

FIRE SAFETY • IF FIRE OR SMOKE THREATENS THE AREA – Remove all patients

FIRE SAFETY • IF FIRE OR SMOKE THREATENS THE AREA – Remove all patients from the fire area – Turn off all equipment, leaving lights on – Calm and reassure any patients not immediately threatened by the fire – Close Oxygen shutoff valves as necessary
