Fire Resistant Watertight Structural Doors The Big Idea • Structural doors aren’t fire resistant, and fire resistant doors aren’t structural (i. e. , watertight) • We need a door that is both fire resistant AND watertight The Plan • Begin with new family of Navy watertight doors from prior NSRP project • Testing of various configurations of STI Marine Firestop materials • Qualification Testing for Fire in Phase II Timeline • February 2020 – January 2022 A more elegant and cost-effective solution 4 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Team Members Ingalls Shipbuilding • Mike Poslusny, Kristi Carroll, Sean Murphy, Michael Thompson, John Walks STI Marine • Terry Mannion Southwest Research Institute • Kyle Fernandez 5 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT NSWC • Usman Sorathia, Code 612 ATI • Jim House, NSRP Project Manager Newport News Shipbuilding • Alicia D’Aurora Harmon, Program Technical Representative A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Work Breakdown Structure • • 6 Task 1: Project initiation Task 2: Validate requirements with NAVSEA Task 3: Develop door test plan Task 4: Execute door testing Task 5: Compile test results and pursue NAVSEA approvals Task 6: Final report and final project workshop Task 7: Program management and technology transfer (both phases) HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT Phase II A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Task 2: Validate requirements with NAVSEA • MIL-STD-3020 and MIL-PRF-32478 interpretation • Tech Warrant Holder guidance • Research and develop fireproof materials and insulation • Perform preliminary testing on fireproof designs 7 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Task 3: Develop door test plan • Develop test fixture design for 26”x 66” and 30”x 66” doors • Finalize door designs • Develop MIL-STD-3020 test procedure • Obtain NAVSEA approval for fire testing 8 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Summary Project concept and plan are simple Project team has the right players for success Project team will use Phase I to perform exploratory testing and prepare for Phase II qualification testing 9 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Standardization of Watertight Hatches and Scuttles NSRP SDMT Virtual Meeting May 26, 2020 Mike Poslusny 10 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Standardization of Watertight Hatches and Scuttles The Big Idea • Too much variation in Navy “standard” designs drives a lot of downstream issues The Plan • Use the process from the prior NSRP RA project • Look for opportunities to increase commonality and reduce part count • Set the table for future qualification effort Timeline • February 2020 – January 2021 11 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Team Members Ingalls Shipbuilding • Mike Poslusny, Kristi Carroll, Sean Murphy, John Walks, Tom Bryant ATI • Nick Laney, NSRP Project Manager NASSCO • Monika Skowronska, Program Technical Representative 12 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Work Breakdown Structure • • • 13 Task 1: Current design review (underway) Task 2: Prepare standardization plan Task 3: Prepare first draft of drawings Task 4: Final report Program management and technology transfer HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Tasks 1 and 2 Current Design Review • Compile data on hatches and scuttles on current Ingalls programs • Focus will be on Navy programs (DDG, LHA, LPD) Prepare Standardization Plan • Looking for design variation in similar sizes that can be reduced or eliminated • Common sizes will give the best return on investment 14 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
