FINAL REPORT Elise Nyborg
Assignments Assigned ■ Analyze the energy consumption of fume hoods in the experimental building of the University of Tokyo using Excel ■ Make a poster and analyze the situation Completed ■ Researched fume hoods and green labs ■ Analyzed data (partially) ■ Designed posters, stickers, and badges ■ Formulated a potential behavioral program to reduce energy use ■ Created a strategy plan for the execution of the behavioral program ■ Created a blog

BUT… posters are not enough! ■ Impact needs to be – Strong – Sustained ■ It is not realistic to replace or modify all the fume hoods to be more energy efficient, so we need to change behaviors instead
Behavioral program to reduce energy use ■ Competition: A competition in which labs/ floors can compete against each other to reduce their fume hood energy use the most. A fun photo campaign (picture of yourself closing the fume hood) for the chance to win a Reward. ■ Prompts: Placement of “Shut the Sash” stickers on each fume hood as a prompt/reminder, as well as instruction sheets ■ Communication: General outreach through posters, flyers, and emails ■ Goal Setting: Monthly goals can be set for each lab/ floor. These goals can be re-evaluated as research groups’ size changes and as their work changes to more or less hood-intensive research. ■ Reward: Labs/floors that achieve their monthly goal can be entered into a monthly raffle in which they could win candy, stickers or themed lapel badges (easy to make online). Labs/floors that meet their monthly goal at least 4 of the most recent 6 months can be invited to a celebratory “sushi party” with presentations to recognize the semester’s accomplishments ■ Feedback: Feedback on performance could be distributed via email each month – once to let lab users know if they are on track for their goal, and the other time to let them know who won the raffle that month. Up to date posters with charts of results can be placed up to show exactly how much energy each lab/floor is using, or can be kept track of using whiteboard system? . * Modified from Harvard Campaign due to its particular success!
Strategic Plan for Fume Hood Campaign ■ Divided into three relevant sections: – About the Problem – Goals – Strategy ■ I hope that this document is of use, or can be modified to fit your needs.
Conclusion ■ Thank you for listening! Please check out my blog below ■ I am also happy to work more on this, if needed! – I will send a copy of my research from the interim report if necessary – I am also happy to send the results of the surveys I have conducted https: //tokyogreenblog. wordpress. com/
