FINAL MAJOR PROJECT TILLY BURKE – LEVEL 2 ART & DESIGN
URBAN & NATURAL MOODS - Urban and Natural Moods - My project is an abstract representation of the different colours, textures and patterns found in the urban and natural environments of Kendal. - To represent this I chose to use one of my favourite techniques which is embroidery.
MY INITIAL RESEARCH - To begin research for my personal FMP, I looked into multiple artists as well as Pinterest. - The first artist I looked into was Emily Wright as I am familiar with her work, and her work has inspired me for a long time. I am also a big fan of her colour pallettes and stitching styles. - The next place I got inspiration from was Pinterest to get ideas for the background of my embroidery hoop. This included water colour, felt and material collaging.
MY PRIMARY RESEARCH - To begin my primary research I started off by looking into different background ideas using Pinterest - Next I conducted my own experiment with using water colour on white cotton material to see how it would turn out. - After testing water colour and out ruling the other options for multiple reasons I went with water colour.
MY SECONDARY RESEARCH - Over the coarse of my FMP I have looked into five artists overall, and done three Pinterest inspiration posts. - This was immensly helpful in me coming up with new ideas for composition, colour pallettes and stitching techniques. - Pinterest was a great place for me to look at embroidery techniques. - Looking at different artist really helped me with composition and layout.
DEVELOPING MY IDEAS - When I first began my project I did some very rough sketches to get a visual idea of what my FMP would look like. - Just after starting my FMP I created some much more detailed sketched plans, as I was obviously struggling from not having a clear plan on my design. - I also took inspiration from my primary research pictures I had taken in a trip into town for a previous mini FMP project.
PRODUCING MY FINAL OUTCOME - I started out by creating multiple water colour backgrounds, and then making one best final one for my FMP. - When I began my FMP I started creating based off the design plans I had made and the stitching techniques I already new. - I also used raw white felt as clouds in my FMP as an extra element. - The techniques and matreials in my FMP developed and got better as I continued to do research as I was going along.
PRESENTING MY FINAL OUTCOME - I plan to display my embroidery hoop against a black background. This will make the colours stand out. - Possibly in a frame to have the black background behind it in the frame.
EVALUATING MY FINAL OUTCOME - Strengths Many stitching techniques Clear urban and natural side Unique - Weaknesses Rushed sections Didn’t stick to parts of plan Unclear to what things are - To further improve my FMP I would go back and crate a more detailed plan.
