Sign off • In class • But no later than May 4!! • May 1 – in class – come prepared to make a short presentation of your final project, 2 -3 mins each (this is not part of the grade but for information exchange with the class). Please ask if you have questions. 2
Selection and query (#1) • Using the STATES. TAB (aka USA. TAB) data, make thematic maps of the following: – The change in population from 1980 to 1990 was less than 20% and median income went up by more than 5%. – The top 20 states in population density. • Assuming that Male/Female ratios are the same for all races, what states have more than 1 million black men? • Produce: – Pie-chart thematic map of the race distributions in each state. – Bar-chart thematic map of the male and female populations for 1980 and 1990. 3
Values and variances (#2) • Using the yearly rain averages (in hundredths of inches) for the decade 1980 -1989 unpacked from rain_us_1980. zip (dat): – Make a thematic map of the decade average rainfall in each state, including Hawaii and Alaska. – Make a thematic map of the variance of the decade rainfall in each state, including Hawaii and Alaska. – Make a map of the states that had a significantly different rainfall than New York. Use the t-test described in Excel (Two-Sample Assuming Unequal Variances). Use a 95% probability cutoff (ie the probability that they are different is greater than 95%). 4
Buffering (#3) • Using the California earthquakes and a heads -up digitization of the San Andreas fault, determine how many of the earthquakes were within 20 kilometers of the San Andreas. Do this task with buffering. 5
