Low Power Distance and High Power Distance: In this scene Todd speaks with freedom to his boss, he calls him “Dave” as a friend not as a supervisor. After that he calls him “corporate slime-ball”. His supervisor doesn’t mind that he would have a friendly employee and joke around with him. Todd is freely doing what he wants and even can reject any task he doesn’t want to do. This explains that the USA follow Low Power Distance. USA scores 40 for power distance which is low. (The Hofstede centre) In the other side, his assistant Puro address him as Mister Todd. Which represent a High Power Distance. Later on Todd told Puro to call him just Todd because its less formal. India scores 77 which represents high power distance. (The Hofstede centre)
Communication: In this scene; Todd ate the food with his left hand, at first Puro didn’t tell Todd forwardly that it was inappropriate instead he used face expressions and eye contact to tell him that it was not clean. This shows that india is under high context countries where they have no direct communication. (table-summary-of-high-and-low-context-cultures) On the other side, Todd uses verbal communication he speaks straight forward telling Puro “Why is the MPI so bad? ” , “Puro, this place is a disaster”, “Don’t tell me there is no problem when there is a problem!”. Todd represents USA where verbal communication is mentioned under low context. (table-summary-of-high-and-low-contextcultures)
Low/High Context culture: Todd is under pressure because he doesn’t know he will get the MPI down to 6. He wants to complete is where this is considered a low context. Where countries representing low context culture focus on the result to get their goal like in USA. (table-summary-of-high-and-lowcontext-cultures) On the other side, Puro is being worried on Todd because he left his work responsibilities and looked tired. Puro bought him food and also he took care of him. This shows that relationship is part of the indian culture and this is represented under the high context culture. (tablesummary-of-high-and-low-context-cultures)
Relationships The employee asked if he was able to get his family picture and place it on his office desk. Where it shows that he is really appreciating his family. When Todd approved that the employee was really happy about it. This explains high context level in India where they have a strong sense of relation to their family. (table-summary-ofhigh-and-low-context-cultures) On the other hand when Todd and Puro were talking about their parents, Todd mentioned how he doesn’t miss them when he was at home near them, and how he only visited them only few times a year. Todd represent low context in which is short term relation. ()
Individualism and Collectivism: Todd is explaining to Puro how each person should be independent and work for himself. He is telling him how you should work hard in order to own a 50 -inch plasma. This represents independence which is under individualism. USA scores 91 for individualism that’s why everyone is relying on himself, where India scores 48. (dimensions of national culture)
