Film Poster Analysis Horror/ Thriller Genre
The title of the film ‘The Conjuring’ is in capital letters, this helps for it to stand out and look sinister. ‘The’ is sitting on top of ‘conjuring’ to make them look joined and ‘the’ is also smaller than ‘conjuring’ which shows the significance in the words. The picture is a part of the film and it sets the scene with the house and tree with the rope tied to it, this makes you question what actually happened in this house. The house is being absorbed by the other features of the poster such as the tree, clouds, noose, captions and even the tree’s branches are all turning in towards the house and subtlety pulling the audience’s attention into one significant place. Also if you look closely, below the tree there is a shadow of a person’s legs to show that someone hung themselves or that’s how they died. The tree in the photo is quite bold as it is in the foreground of the picture. It might be the anchor of the film, which means the plot is based around the tree. There’s always smaller writing with the director and producers names in. But the actors/ actresses aren’t stated at this point. The colours used are of a low saturation an again do not include the blood, gore reference of red killing. The fact that the director decided to use a subtle approach suggests this movie is clever in the way they approach killings. It also suggests that there is a back story to the film, almost like a There’ s a common convention of other films that the director had done, this is so if you enjoyed the other similar films, you may also enjoy this one. The picture is quite dull ad eerie as there’s fog/ a smoke effect, the weather is also quite miserable (grey clouds) to add to this effect. A supernatural atmosphere. It says that it is based on a true story/ happenings that have happened which also adds to the tension, distress and mystery to the scariness. The credit block has been placed to the lest of the poster in order to prevent it blocking the key feature of the poster. The shadow figure on the right. However, another reason is that most audiences read left to right, it makes it easier to read and therefore draws attention to the section. The main image on this horror film poster is created in such a way that its looks deserted, there is a noose hanging from the tree connoting death or suicide, if the image is studied closely enough then the audience will be able to see that in the shadow of the tree there appears to be a person hanging from the noose, but in the real image we cannot see that, this divides the sides between reality and the supernatural world in a very simplistic but significant way. Release date : This builds up an anticipation for the audience to look forward to the dare that they can go and view the film. The film is rated a 15 so the audience is likely to be teenagers and young adults as horror films often appal to this demographic. No stars are used as USP’s on the poster, however using “The Warrens” in the tagline could serve the same purpose as they were famous paranormal investigators and have had films previously made that based on some of their most famous cases, for example The Amityville Horror films are often set in secluded locations, the house in the poster appears to be in a field which shows this convention. House also used in film posters because they are often creepy and have the potential to be haunted. The dark colours ant the for also show typical horror conventions, many horror films use fog to create tension because it creates mystery as to who or what is hides in the fog. The noose used on the poster is also a convention because props
The trees being bare and lifeless, suggests that the film is set in the autumn, an eerie setting in terms of horror. The grey clouds give the sense that a storm is brewing, both literally and metaphorically in this context. The trees almost frame the shot, connoting that something is ‘closing in’ on the narrative. The fact that they are so dark compared to the dreary background connote that they are an important part of revealing the narrative. The house being so far away from everything else illustrates the distance (isolation), connoting that the event occurs inside the house and is completely detached from reality/ the outside worlds. The noose on the tree signifies that a tragic event has occurred, and it is not until we look more deeply into the poster that we spot a vital detain to the narrative. The director again mentioned in the top of the poster and until you read the credit block, it is not obvious as to who the director is – a method use to attract the audience to the poster by wanting to read the whole thing. The fact that the text is also a deep, old juxtaposed with the washed out background would attract the audience attention. Horror is promised in the film, the images on the poster are used to connote the horror genre. The noose symbolises death, the tree in the foreground is jagged and eerie and the house in background could be associated with the supernatural, i. e haunting. The title and tagline connote horror because the title of the film already suggests a link with the supernatural and the tagline mentions wellknown paranormal investigators, again suggesting supernatural theme and therefore promising horror. No expert witnesses are quoted on the poster.
