Film and Video Editing Techniques – Music Video By Marlon Francis
Conceptual Format • I’m going to use a conceptual format because this is how I’ll be able to achieve a strange and unique video. I want to use the green screen but not in a cheap/tacky way, ill use it remove the background of the close up shots of someone's face when they are miming the lyrics. I don’t think that I will be able to create a good music video using a story format because the hardest thing is thinking up of a good story that fits in with the song.
Editing Techniques • I aim to create a surreal/unusual music video for my project. I’m going to film using a green screen so I can easily create unusual scenes. The software I’m mainly going to use is Adobe After Effects, this will allow me to have multiple different clips on the screen at one time, this software also has better tools for getting the clips to look how you want them to look. This way I can make the music video as unique as possible. These are two screen shots from a music video that I am inspired by, I want to use the VHS or old camera effect like it has been used in this video, such as the bad quality and “fuzziness”.
Filming Techniques • When I’m filming the music video I’m going to use an old school camera so the quality isn’t full HD, I think this creates a unique and different effect. Most music videos these days include the best of the best cameras, where as I want to use a camera which isn’t good quality at all, like it is almost unclear. For the lip syncing I’m going to film from the shoulders above so its just the persons face in the shot, this will make it easier when it comes to editing. I’m going to use 2 different lens types in my music video, I am going to use a fisheye lens as well as a zoom lens, with means I can get a great range of different shot types to help make the video more diverse.
Inspiration • My main inspirations are Rejjie Snow and Yung Lean, they both create very strange and unique music videos. My Main inspiration is this music video, I like the idea of layering videos on top of each other and using the green screen https: //www. youtube. co m/watch? v=4 Cbw. FK 4 op. U
Song Choice: • I want to use a rap song for my music video because this is the genre that listen to most. I’m looking at rap music from the 1980’s/90’s because of the slower styled rap which will be easier to lip sync when recording. I thought to myself that I could also include skateboarding in my music video as rap music from that time period is very popular in the skateboarding community. I was looking at trap songs as well as possible indie rock, however I want to make my video almost ‘old school’ and trap and indie rock isn’t very ‘old school’.
Target Audience As I mentioned previously I said that skate community is very fund of old school rap so I will aim my music video at them as well as teenagers whether they skate or not. I’m going to try and make it visually interesting so maybe even older people will enjoy watching it, even if they do not like the song. If I make it visually interesting then hopefully people will watch it and take interest in it even if they don’t like the song.
Intended Project • I don’t plan to have “characters” as such but I do plan to have a specific person miming the lyrics of the song as well as other videos coming up at the same time. I want to include other people in the video doing activities like skateboarding (as I mentioned previously). I want to try and portray the life of a ‘teenage skater’ in this music vide, but try and keep it obvious it’s a music video at the same time.
