Fiji Flag • The current flag of Fiji was adopted on October 10, 1970. • The union jack (upper left) is because of the country's time under British rule. • The flag's blue background stands for the surrounding pacific ocean. • The coat of arms display a golden British lion holding a cocoa pod, as well as panels with a palm tree, sugar cane, bananas and dove of peace.
History • Once known as the Cannibal Isles. Before the 19 th century the Fijians were cannibals. Of course once Christianity spread, the practice was abandoned. They stick to fish now. • Fiji is made up of 322 islands but only 110 are lived on. • The Fiji islands were discovered in 1643 by Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer. • In 1874 Fiji became a British Colony. • It gained its independence in 1970.
