Alliteration Definition • Repetition of initial consonant sounds Example • Sally saw sea shells by the sea shore.
Allusion Definition • Reference to literary, artistic, scientific or historical people or things Example • “Don’t go all Dr. Phil on me. ”
Hyperbole Definition • An exaggeration to stress a point. Example • “I’m so tired I could sleep for days. ”
Irony Definition • An unlucky coincidence. Example • “Marshall just loves cleaning his room. ”
Metaphor Definition • A comparison of unlike things without “like” or “as. ” Example • “Life is a highway. ”
Onomatopoeia Definition • Using a word that sounds like a sound. Example • “Bang” • “Buzz” • “Meow”
Oxymoron Definition • Placing two words together that mean the opposite of one another. Example • “After the concert, there was a deafening silence, then a huge round of applause. ”
Personification Definition • Treats a nonhuman subject as if it were human Example • The wind whispers through the trees.
Simile Definition • A comparison of unlike things using “like” or “as. ” Example • “Sly as a fox. ” • “Hot as the sun. ”
Symbol Definition • Object replacing an idea Example • A dove symbolizes peace.
