Year 11 Achievement A meeting for parents 2 nd October 2019

The 9 -1 grade scale • 4 is a standard pass • 5 is a good pass • We would like many of our students to be aiming at grade 7 (grade A equivalent) • Grade 9 is achievable ! (5% of all grades were at grade 9 in 2019)
Continued success at Cardinal Hume 9 -1 GCSE has been gradually phased in • For the past 3 years at least 80% of Year 11 students gained at least a grade 4 in both Mathematics and English, with almost 60% gaining at least a grade 5 in both subjects. • Progress across all subjects has been outstanding Challenges ØAll subjects are now using the new 9 -1 grade scale and with it new tougher specifications ØGreater number of examinations (all at the end of Y 11) ØNo Controlled Assessment (Non-examined content) in many subjects

9 -1 GCSE – a 2 year process Messages from 2017 -19 • Vast number of examinations at the end of Year 11 • Those students who had spread their revision and efforts across 2 years were most prepared for success • Very little coursework, so exam technique and retention of knowledge is very important Additional support from CHCS • Study support – after school • Lunchtime revision sessions • Revision folders with associated subject specific resources • Mentoring – pastoral and SLT • 121 tuition in Maths and English • Study sessions during the GCSE examination period MOST IMPORTANT is still : good attendance / consistent effort in lessons / homework completed to a high standard
School Interventions • Study Support – departments provide additional support and opportunities to catch up missing work or to consolidate and extend learning opportunities. It runs for 4 days of the week – a Tuesday is left free for students and it would be helpful if any appointments are made at this time. • Revision Sessions – departments usually offer them as we get closer to exams often in holiday times. You will be informed about these and we urge you to ensure students attend. • SLT Mentoring – progress reports aimed at ensuring students are not coasting in lessons. We want all students to fulfil their potential so identify those who need a bit more of a push from the data we have gathered.
Raising Achievement Mentoring at Cardinal Hume Catholic School Raising Achievement Mentoring exists to support students to reach their full potential and support their wellbeing. Our school motto ‘Fide, Labore, Caritate: With Faith, Hard Work and Kindness’ underpins this support. Assistant Heads of House and Mentors are committed to supporting pupils with practical help and individual care. ”
Any pupil can struggle…We work with pupils of all abilities who have been identified as they may need help with one or more of these areas. • Most students now face 20+ exams at the end of year 11. For most pupils this feels daunting. • A lack of coursework means pupils have to begin revision earlier, and recap content studied months previously. • Work in class needs to be neatly organised and well presented. • Homework is set to recap skills and revisit content.
We fully believe parent input is crucial and we appreciate it when parents sign the report. Please discuss your child’s day with them and how they could improve or maintain success. Pupils take their report to every lesson. Mentoring blocks last 4 weeks. Teachers use this criteria to grade pupils in each lesson. The criteria reflects work and independent study skills and good behaviour for learning. Teachers will record work to be completed, improved. Punishments would only be given as per usual expectations.

Next steps for students in Y 11 • Sixth Form – at least 5 grades of 4 including English Language – must have merits in any vocational courses to study them. A Majority of 6 s indicates suitability for most A Level subjects. Some need a minimum of a grade 7. • College – Level 3 courses entry requirements are similar to school. Level 2 courses are lower but are only of the level students are currently working at. We offer a Level 2 Employment Diploma which has a minimum entry tariff of 5 grade 3 s. • Apprenticeships – Many of the better ones request specific grades in English, Maths and Science. Then a minimum quantity of GCSEs at 4 or above or 5 or above.
Further on: • University – use GCSE grades as a means of deciding who to offer places. Without a high proportion of good grades many courses and universities will be off limits. • Fast Track Schemes – many of the bigger employers offer fast track entry after GCSE and after A Level. To access these again you need a high proportion of top grades, they are very competitive and prestigious leading to excellent salaries and career prospects. • Degree Apprenticeships – companies looking to recruit students at 18 to work but also to pay for them to do a degree. Many have specific requirements in terms of GCSE grades.
