Fictional pieces might be written in first, second or third person. The point of view of the piece sets the tone for writing helping the reader understand something new about the characters. In nonfiction, the author’s point of view helps the reader know he or she feels about the subject of the text based on the details that are included (or not) in the text. If an author clearly states an opinion, it is easy for readers to understand the point view, but an author might show all sides of an issue to let readers make up their own mind. *

This author’s point of view on how to eat is that people should eat healthy food because it will make them feel better! *
Even though the author of the passage on the previous slide uses “you, ” because this is a nonfiction piece, we care more about what the author thinks about the subject of the passage than how he is narrating his thoughts. *
