FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys Parts

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys Parts previously endorsed by FGDC: • Part 1: Reporting Methodology, FGDC-STD-007. 1 -1998 • Part 2: Standards for Geodetic Networks, FGDC-STD-007. 2 -1998 • Part 3: National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy, FGDC-STD-007. 3 -1998 • Part 4: Standards for Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Facility Management, FGDC-STD-007. 4 -2002

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys Provides

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys Provides minimum standards for horizontal and vertical accuracy of features such as: • water depths • objects on seafloor • navigational aids • shoreline for coastal waters of U. S. and its Territories

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys Does

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys Does NOT cover • hydrographic surveys for river and harbor navigation projects • surveys for project construction Which are covered by Part 4: Standards for Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Facilities Management

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys Spatial

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys Spatial Accuracy: 95% Confidence Level Horizontal Datum: NAD 83 Vertical Datum(s): • Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) for Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf Coast charts • International Great Lakes Datum (1985)

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys Standards

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys Standards vary by survey classification: • Special Order - Minimum underkeel clearance; hazardous bottom conditions • Order 1 - Greater underkeel clearance than Special Order; soft silt/sand bottom • Order 2 - Depths less than 200 meters not covered by Special Order or Order 1 • Order 3 - Depths greater than 200 meters

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys •

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys • Based on International Hydrographic Organization (IHO)Standards for Hydrographic Surveys, Special Publication No. 44 (April 1998) • S-44 developed over 4 years by 60 nations • IHO is a Liaison with ISO Technical Committee 211, Geographic Information • U. S. represented by NIMA and Office of Coast Survey, NOS, NOAA • Web site: http: //www. iho. shom. fr/

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys •

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys • Standard developed by FGDC Bathymetric Subcommittee (now Marine and Coastal Spatial Data Subcommittee) • Standard released for 90 -day public review in November 2000 • Notice to broad-based geospatial data organizations such as ASPRS, ACSM, URISA, and NSGIC, as well as 70+ contacts on Subcommittee mailing list • No comments received during public review • SWG voted to recommend CG approval for FGDC endorsement at its April 10, 2002 meeting

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys Concerns

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys Concerns raised by SWG on May 6, 2002 1. Document specific differences from IHO S 44 2. Full compliance with FGDC‑STD‑ 001‑ 1998 3. Response completed – June 4, 2003

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys From

FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5: Standards for Nautical Charting Hydrographic Surveys From August 2003 CG Minutes, http: //www. fgdc. gov/fgdc/coorwg/2003/cwgaug 03. html Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5 - Julie Binder Maitra, FGDC & Jerry Mills, NOAA This standard has completed public review and the Standards Working Group has voted to approve it. Jerry Mills is the technical author of the standard. Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards, Part 5 pertains to standards for nautical charting hydrographic surveys. It provides minimum standards for horizontal and vertical features like water depths, objects on the sea floor, etc. This is based on the International Hydrographic Organization Standard approved in April 1998 that was developed over four years by 60 nations (see http: //www. iho. shom. fr/ for more information). Action 6: The Coordination Group voted in favor of forwarding the recommendation to the Steering Committee for the approval of the you! Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standard, Part 5, Thank as an FGDC Standard.
