Egg Demonstration: Break a raw egg (without breaking the yolk) into a clear glass. Add a 1 ounce shot glass of alcohol. With a swizzle stick, gently stir some of the alcohol into the egg white. Watch the effects on the egg white.

What is FAS? FAS is the pattern of birth defects, learning and behavioural problems affecting individuals whose mothers consumed alcohol during pregnancy. FAS is the most common preventable cause of mental retardation. There is no amount of alcohol use during pregnancy that has been proven to be completely safe.

Characteristics of FAS: Low birth weight Small head circumference Facial abnormalities ( smaller eye openings, flattened cheek bones, indistinct philtrum ) Organ disfunction Epilepsy

Characteristics of FAS continued: Failure to thrive Developmental delay Poor coordination/fine motor skills Poor socialization skills (difficulty building and maintaining friendships, relating to others) Lack of imagination or curiosity Leaning difficulties (poor memory, inability to understand concepts such as time and money, poor language comprehension, poor problem solving skills) Behavioural Problems (hyperactivity, inability to concentrate, social withdrawal, stubbornness, impulsiveness, anxiety)

Environment for Success - Classroom: Place the child at the front of the room for the entire year to help him/her focus Allow the student to have short breaks when necessary Allow for sufficient time when preparing to leave for the day (before the bell rings) Have them preform one task at a time Have them repeat instructions If the activity is new walk through the activity with them first When assignments become longer you should have checkpoints throughout to check on their progress (different due dates for smaller sections) Provide them with a copy of the teachers/another students notes (computer use is helpful)

Environment for Success - Physical Education: Play music during class time Select a student to act as a buddy for the student with FAS Use a visual mode of learning as much as possible Incorporate as much kinaesthetic activities as possible Use pictures to aid understanding of concepts Allow students with FAS to help supervise or make them a leader Set realistic goals (swimming, dancing and gymnastics are better choices for students with FAS)
