Birth, Death, and Early Life • • • Born in 1480 in Portugal. As a boy, he worked in the Queen's household. This allowed him to hear about all the discoveries that were being made. As a young man he fought in the war for Portugal as it was over throwing colonies in India and land in Africa. Died on April 26, 1521 in the Philippines at the age of 41. He was stabbed in the battle that was going on at the island of Mactan in the Philippines.

Exploration • • • He wanted to get to the Spice Islands by going west. He went almost around the world on Sept. 20 1519 before he died in 1521. The sponsuring country is half of Portugal and half Spain. As he crossed it, he named the Pacific Ocean meaning peaceful for its beauty. On September 6, 1522, only one of the original five ships made it back to Spain. While Magellan had started out with 270 men, only 18 made it back to Spain. They had however, proved that you could sail all the way around the world.

Encounters with Natives • • • The people there were very friendly, and Magellan's men enjoyed the fresh food. They rested for nine days, waiting for the men to recover from their difficult journey. As Magellan went from island to island, he converted the natives to Christianity. He loved doing this so much, that even though people advised against it, he went to the island of Mactan to convert more natives. . When they reached the shore, they were attacked by 1500 natives. Magellan was hit by arrows and spears, and finally killed, on April 26, 1521.

Interesting Facts There were five ships and 270 crew members when they left. One of the ships was ship wrecked. Another one was lost because of desertion. • The crew ate sawdust, rats, leather strips, they drank yellow, smelling water, and had scurvy. • Three years after Magellan’s death the rest of the crew had sailed the rest of the way around the world. It took 18 crew members and one ship. •
