FEMALE REPORODUCTIVE SYSTEM OF PILA The female reproductive organs includes… -Ovary -Oviduct -Receptaculum seminis -Uterus -Vagina -Copulatory organ -Hypobranchial gland

Ovary: • Like testis in male, ovary occupies similar position in female i. e.

Ovary: • Like testis in male, ovary occupies similar position in female i. e. into first, second and third whorls of the shell. • It is highly branched structure • When it is immature the colour of the ovary is light orange, but in fully mature organism colour becomes darker. • The branches of ovary are called acini. • Acini are flask-shaped structures. • Ovary opens into oviduct.

 • Oviduct: • It is semi-transparent, narrow tube arising from the middle of

• Oviduct: • It is semi-transparent, narrow tube arising from the middle of the ovary. • It runs along the inner margin of digestive gland situated just below the skin. • It opens into receptaculum seminis.

 • Uterus: • It is large pear-shaped structure. • It is yellow in

• Uterus: • It is large pear-shaped structure. • It is yellow in colour. • It is situated in the body whorl (last & largest coil of shell) below the intestine. • Uterus is differentiated into rounded basal part & tubular apical part. • The Receptaculum seminis opens into basal part of uterus. • The apical part of uterus opens into vagina.

 • Vagina: • The terminal part of uterus is known as vagina. •

• Vagina: • The terminal part of uterus is known as vagina. • It is white in coloured tube. • It enters the branchial cavity at its right posterior corner and runs along the left side of the rectum to open little behind the anus by a narrow slit like opening female genital pore. • Female genital aperture situated on a small papilla.

 • Copulatory Organ: • • The female has rudimentary copulatory organ. It is

• Copulatory Organ: • • The female has rudimentary copulatory organ. It is small lies beneath the glandular fold of mantle. It is of uniform thickness but pointed at tip. It has rudimentary groove along its inner surface. • Hypobranchial gland: • It is poorly developed with thickened area.

• Copulation: • • Pila breeds during rainy season. Copulation occurs either in water or on land. Copulation lasts for about 3 to 4 hours. During copulation male and female comes together with facing their right nuchal lobes. The copulatory organ of male become expanded and gets attached to the genital papilla by its base. The copulatory organ along with the sheath are inserted into the mantle cavity of the female. Then the tip of the copulatory organ is put into the female genital pore. The sperms are transferred through vagina into receptaculum seminis.

 • Ovulation & development : • Fertilization in Pila is internal but development

• Ovulation & development : • Fertilization in Pila is internal but development of embryo takes place outside the body of female. • Ovulation starts after two to three days after copulation. • 200 -800 rounded (like pea seeds) eggs are laid in a sheltered cavity on moist place but never under water. • Both the parents do not look after the eggs. • Development is direct i. e. there is no larval forms. • Young Pila hatches out of the egg. • The entire life cycle is completed in about 60 days. • During development the phenomenon of torsion occurs.
