Biography: Felix Nussbaum was born in Osnabrück, in December 11, 1904. He was a German painter of Jewish religion, with several works that illustrate the horrors of the Holocaust, of which he was a victim. In 1920 he began his studies in Art in Hamburg and Berlin, while he was still allowed by the contemporary political situation. In the 1920 s and ’ 30 s, his exhibitions in Berlin had great success. With the arrival of the Nazis to power in 1933, he was forced to live in exile in Italy, France and finally in Belgium with his Polish wife, Felka Platek, whom he married in 1937. With the occupation of Belgium by the Germans in 1940, Nussbaum was arrested and taken to the field of Saint. Cyprien in France. However he managed to escape with his wife and succeeded in hiding in a friend’s house, also an artist, in Brussels. He was betrayed and indicted in June 1944 and immediately arrested. He was taken to concentration camp of Malines and then to Auschwitz, where he was assassinated in August 2, 1944. The painting became an act of resistance, because it allowed him to maintain his human dignity and, for a long time, gave him the strength he needed to survive. Stillleben mit Afrikanischer Skulptur, 1943
His images are shaped in line with the spirit of the time, the threat and the disorientation of emigration, the threat of war and bombing, the fear in the concentration camp, isolation in secrecy and concealment and, finally, the grief and annihilation of the Jews in Europe by the Nazi regime. The work of Felix Nussbaum offers a rare glimpse into the mind of an individual between the victims of the Holocaust. In 1998 it was opened the "Felix-Nussbaum-Haus", in Osnabrück, where are exhibited all Nussbaum’s paintings, , more than 160 works. Orgelmann, 1943
