Sheep terminology Sheep and lambs Sheep are over one year of age. They have usually produced offspring. Lambs are less than one year of age. They have usually not produced offspring. Lamb and mutton Lamb is also the term for the flesh of a young domestic sheep eaten as food. The meat from a sheep that is older than 12 months is called mutton. Ewes A female sheep is called a ewe. Yoe is a slang term for ewe. A young female is called a ewe lamb. The process of giving birth to lambs is called lambing. Another word for birthing is parturition. Another word for pregnancy is gestation. Rams A male sheep is called a ram. Buck is the slang term for ram. A young male is called a ram lamb. In parts of the United Kingdom, a ram is called a tup and the mating season is called tupping. Wethers A castrated male sheep is called a wether. Wethers are less aggressive than rams. George is a wether. Yearling A yearling is an animal between 1 and 2 years of age that may or may not have produced offspring. In other countries, a yearling ewe is called a hogget, shearling, gimmer, theave, or teg. Flock A group of sheep is called a flock. Larger groups of sheep are called bands or mobs. Shepherd A shepherd is a person who cares for sheep.

Toxicity usually depends upon the growing conditions and stage, plant part, and amount consumed. As a general rule, sheep usually avoid poisonous plants. Problems arise when desirable forages are scarce and poisonous plants are abundant. The effects produced by the ingestion of poisonous plants are extremely variable and depend upon the poison consumed in the plant. Some poisonous plants cause rapid death. Others produce gastro-enteritis or cause nervous symptoms or locomotion problems. Treatment is usually unrewarding.

Feeding Problems Feeding methods consist of grazing, browsing, auto feeders and trough feeding. 1. Must contain adequate selenium in deficient areas 2. Lactating does and growing kids require more overall protein 3. Amounts can be varied to adjust to legume or grass forages • Goats require good amounts of selenium, copper and cobalt. • Male goats that have too much protein and calcium in their feed can develop kidney stones. • Lack of forage can turn into bloat. • Bottle fed kids if not fed properly can bloat and become fatal. • Lack of selenium can result in white muscle disease.
Goat meat is unique in flavor and palatability. It is leaner than many other red meats and usually less tender. However, its leanness has a place in today's market for meats with less fat. Cabrito stands for roasted meat and is from goat kids 4 -8 weeks of age. Its main use is for barbecue meat, and it is highly sought after by certain ethnic groups. Chevon is meat from goat kids 48 -60 pounds or 6 -9 months old. Of these two types, cabrito is the most tender. Goat meat at the moment is on the market for between £ 12. 50 -£ 14 per Kg!
