Feasibility Ethics in Doctoral Research How the IRB
Feasibility & Ethics in Doctoral Research How the IRB can help! Annabelle Goodwin, Ph. D Heather Miller, Ph. D Jenelle Dembsey, MA
Feasible and ethical research should go hand in order to promote research success • How long do you think it will be to access the participants or data that you want to use? • How will you that? • How do you ensure that it is ethical? • Who do you need to talk to? • How many different data collection strategies are needed for you to answer your research question? feasible ethical feasible
Who are the gatekeepers?
How will you access the gatekeepers? • When thinking about gatekeepers consider who they are while setting up the study. • When will data be collected? • Who will give permission? • What do you need to do to establish a relationship? • Follow processes that may exist (hospitals, schools, businesses)
What is your role? Understanding this makes a difference with your research. • As a novice Researcher? • You may need access: • to data • to people in your local setting • to resources • As a professional in the local setting? • You may have access: • to data • to people • to resources • However, for your research you may not be able to use your ‘professional’ access.
Ethical Research Considerations What is your role as doctoral student? Are you in a position of power in your local setting? Could you unknowingly put your stakeholders at risk? What about the possibility of not knowing, but being coercive?
Welcome to our guests! • Annabelle Goodwin – Inclusion – How this makes a difference in your research • Jenelle Dembsey- Accessibility
It’s important to consider what you are asking and not to limit your options… • How can I be inclusive of gender in my data collection? • Answer • Gender is no longer recognized as binary. All documents involved in research that ask for gender/sex must provide inclusive options. Consider the example below: • Gender: Please select your response from the options below. • • Woman Man Transgender Woman Transgender Man Gender Queer/Non-binary I prefer not to answer (open) I prefer to self-describe
Accessibility • Consider the accessibility of your study design for disabled participants • Contact Jenelle (jdembsey@ncu. edu) for help with: • Using digital accessibility principles in online surveys, social media posts, websites, Word, or Power. Point • Providing flexible options for participation in your study
Possible Feasibility Challenges • What are you asking and how are you asking it? ? • Are you asking questions you need to know the answers to? • How much time is it going to take for participants? • Additional Considerations • Complex Research Site Permission • Data Usage Agreements and Contracts • Vulnerable Populations • Military or VA Research • Prisoner, Parolee, Probationer Research
Be prepared and ask questions early. Please visit our IRB website and please check out the resources we have re: recorded webinars (important when it comes to recruitment and eligibility criteria). • Do you need to use a company to help you recruit participants? • Qualtrics & Survey monkey can recruit participants • Do you have an incentive? • Can your research ‘help’ your local setting so you have more buy-in?
Remember that the IRB is here to help you!
