FBI STAGES OF PROFILING
STAGE I- Data Assimilation Stage Collection of a variety of in formations like: v. Autopsy Report v. Photographs of the crime scene v. Witness statements v. Police reports
STAGE II- Crime Scene Classification Crime scenes are classified into: Ø Organized Crime Scenes ØDisorganized Crime Scenes Organized Crime Scene: v. Body is hidden. v Weapon is removed from scene. v Appears to be well-planned. v. The victim is specifically targeted. v. Restraints often used. v. Aggression takes place before death Disorganized Crime Scene: v. Body not hidden. v. Weapon is present. v. Appears to be spontaneous. v. Victim may be an acquaintance. v. Aggression or sex post-mortem.
STAGE III- Crime Scene Reconstruction v The information collected in Stage I is used for Crime Scene Reconstruction. v Inference and deduction are involved. v Re-construction helps to clarify the offender’s modus operandi. v Knowing this may help tie the crime to other crimes.
STAGE IV- Profile Generation v Hypotheses about the profile of the offender are drawn. v These hypotheses contain both psychologically as well as demographic features, lifestyle, behavioral habits and personality dynamics. v Offender profiling can be used to answer questions of links between crimes and the possible number of offenders.
STAGE V- Investigation v. The actual profile is provided to requesting agencies and incorporated into their investigation. v. If no suspects are generated, or if new evidence comes to light, the profile is reassessed.
STAGE VI- Apprehension v Cross check the profile produced with the characteristics of the offender once they are apprehended. v More than 80% of the cases has been proved with criminal profiling.
