Buttons n n n Two kinds: sew-through and shank. Sew-through buttons have holes cut through. Shank buttons have a metal or plastic loop on the back. Decorative and functional. Used on openings that overlap. Attach using a double strand of thread. For sew-through buttons: Mark position with a pin. Position button and place a pin on top to give space for fabric to go under button. Sew back and forth five or six times. For heavy duty wear, remove pin, and wind thread around and create a strong shank. Secure. Apply shank button: Sew on button loosely and wind thread under the button to form a small shank
