Thread Repair

oducation �The pointer indicates a carburetor bolt hole with damaged threads. �This was caused by the installation of a carburetor bolt with damaged threads. � Since most bolts are made of steel, damaged bolts will quickly deform and displace threaded holes in softer materials such as aluminum during installation.

Drill Out Stripped Hole �An oversize drill bit is used to enlarge the hole to accept a threaded steel repair insert.

Cutting New Threads �Every thread repair kit contains a matched tap �Creates a threaded hole in the parent material �This gives the threads on the outside diameter of the repair insert something to lock into. � Always keep these special taps separate from other taps to prevent accidental mix-ups.

Using the Tap �Cutting fluid must be used during the tapping operation to reduce friction. �Use a gentle touch to start the tap �Continue in a clockwise direction, stopping every 3/4 turn to reverse direction 1/4 turn.

Removing the Tap �When tap hits the bottom, reverse and remove slowly �Use compressed air to blow out any chips.

The Insert �Thread repair inserts are made from steel and are compatible with virtually any material that can be drilled and tapped.

Preparing the Insert �Pointer indicates the integral drive tang that seats against a step on the tip of the installation tool. �Thread the repair insert (clockwise) all the way onto the end of the installer and make sure the tang fits completely into the step.

Installing the Insert �The installation tool is turned clockwise as the insert threads easily into the oversize hole. �Keep turning until the installer hits bottom, then reverse direction. �The insert will remain lodged in the parent metal as the installer is backed out.

Removing the Drive Tang �The drive tang must be knocked off the end of the insert using a punch. �Use compressed air or a magnetic probe to retrieve the remains of the tang.

The Finished Product �The insert’s steel threads are more resistant to pulling than the aluminum parent material � The repair is actually stronger than stock. .
