FAREBOX REBUILD PROJECT Finance Committee November 16 2016
FAREBOX REBUILD PROJECT Finance Committee November 16, 2016 Information Item Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) St. Petersburg, Florida
OVERVIEW • PSTA’s 210 transit buses are equipped with Genfare Odyssey on-board fare collection equipment i. e. the “farebox”. • The farebox accepts currency as well as magnetic stripe fare media such as day/monthly passes. 1
OVERVIEW • Each farebox receives routine maintenance and testing to ensure the equipment is working properly. • However, PSTA’s fareboxes are approx. 15 years old. • PSTA’s 2013 C. I. P. had $3. 5 M for new replacements. • Instead of purchasing new fareboxes it would be more cost effective to rebuild the existing units. • Rebuilding will result in considerable savings over replacement and will extend each farebox’s useful life by another 10 years. • Modeled after Philadelphia program & others. 2
PROJECT SCOPE The rebuild project entails replacement of the following key critical components. COIN VALIDATOR • Determines the validity of inserted coins. • Valid coins are directed to the cashbox. 3
PROJECT SCOPE BILL VALIDATOR/BILL TRANSPORT • Determines the validity of currency (i. e. cash). • Accepted currency is directed to the cashbox via the bill transport. 4
PROJECT SCOPE CASHBOX • The cashbox fits in the farebox unit and collects all validated currency (cash/coins) and sorts each into two separate compartments. • The cashbox is designed to prevent unauthorized access to revenue collected. 5
PROJECT SCOPE POWER & CHIPSET BOARDS • Power Supply Board (left)—Supplies vehicle electrical power to components in the farebox. • Motherboard (center)—Controls all communications between the power supply board and controller board. • Controller Board (right)—The “brains” of the entire farebox. 6
PROJECT OUTCOME • Rebuilding will reduce problems associated with age in addition to extending the useful life by another ten (10) years. • Cost to rebuild each fare box is estimated to be approximately $4, 533/unit vs $16, 000 for new. • Rebuilding 210 fareboxes results in a potential $2, 408, 000 cost savings when compared to purchasing new fare collection equipment. • PSTA Maintenance Staff will perform the work “inhouse” resulting in additional cost savings. 7
SMARTCARD TRANSITION • The existing fareboxes will be adapted to accept the new fare media known as the “Smart Card”. • Paper magnetic fare cards will be phased out. • Coin and currency will still be accepted as payment. 8
