Raimonds Pauls Ojārs Raimods Pauls -(born on 12 January 1936 in Iļģuciems, Riga Latvia) Latvian composer and piano player who is well known in Latvia, Russia post-Soviet countries and world –wide. He was Minister of culture of Latvia from 1988 to 1993. Pauls has composed music for six musical films and musical theatres, three ballets and over 50 movies and theater performances. CDs with Pauls’s music has been released in several countries outside of Latvia , including Russia, Finland Japan.

Brainstorm(Latvian band) In September 1992 Brainstorm released their first single "Jo tu nāc" (Because You Come) and finished as the 9 th in the Latvian popular music contest, the "Michrophones" questionnaire. After this there came out their first album, Vairāk nekā skaļi (More than Loud) 1993. In 1995 one of the band's earlier songs "Lidmašīnas" (Airplanes) became one of the most commercially successful singles in Latvia and the song of the year on Radio Super FM. The band also performed in Germany and the United Kingdom. Latvian radio stations started to play the song "Tavas mājas manā azotē" (Under my wing is your home), which topped Latvian Airplay charts for 9 weeks and became the biggest hit of 1996. The next step was signing a contract with Microphone Records, one of the biggest record companies in Latvia and releasing the next album Viss ir tieši tā kā tu vēlies (Everything's the Way You Want It) in 1997. The album attained gold status.

Brainstorm's first international single was recorded in 1998 in Germany with Volker Hinkel, the producer of Fool's Garden. This single was "Under my wing» . The single was aired in the Baltic States and also other countries. Soon after this, the band was awarded the Grand Prix prize at the Karlshamn music festival in Sweden. In 2004 Brainstorm and a Russian band Bi-2 recorded the song "Skol'zkie Ulitsy" (Slippery Streets), which was included in their album "Inomarki", released on 2 March in 2004 and which reached number 1 on radio charts in Latvia, Ukraine and Russia. They received the MTV Europe Music award for Best Baltic Act in 2006. The band received three awards at the 2012 Annual Latvian Music Recording Awards. In June 2013 Brain. Storm played in the “Glastonbury Festival” and so became the first band from the Baltics to be playing in this world known festival. They have a lot of other awards.

Imants Ziedonis (3 May 1933 – 27 February 2013) was a Latvian poet and writer who first rose to fame during the Soviet era in Latvia. Ziedonis rose to become the Chairman of the Writers' Union Board and Chairman of the Latvian Culture Foundation. Ziedonis considered defecting to the West but chose to remain in Latvia to preserve from what he perceived as Russian destruction the best of Latvian literature in the National Library. Ziedonis was a prominent member of Atmoda, the re-awakening movement in Latvia, he was elected to the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia in 1990 and was one of the Supreme Council members who voted for the Declaration on the Restoration of Independence of Latvia.

Nominated for The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award – the world's largest prize for children's literature. He died in 2013. Ziedonis was held in highest esteem, indicated by the fact that the prime minister ordered the formation of a special committee for organization of the funeral. Has released first album of the songs with words by Ziedonis simply entitled Viegli (Easily). The second album, entitled Vakars (Evening), was released in 2011, and featured a number of different Latvian musicians. The stamp Imants Ziedonis Will Bloom Eternally was the winner in the stamp design contest organized in social networks by Latvijas Pasts and in 2014. It was realised by a graphic designer Andra Petersone, and the portrait of Ziedonis that is depicted on the stamp is based on the poet's photograph by Leonid Tugalev, which took the first place in an international photo contest in Spain in 1982.

In 1985, Laima Vaikule made her first hit in the Soviet Union. Since 1986, Vaikule has been enjoying a fruitful collaboration with popular Latvian composer, Raimonds Pauls, and Russian poet Ilya Reznik, who wrote such hits as "Vernisage", "Charlie" and "Skripach na kryshe" ("Fiddler on the roof"). She is among the original organizers of the Jurmala Festival of popular music, alongside with Raimonds Pauls. Under the stage name Marie N, she sings a broad range of music ranging from pop to musical theatre and jazz, and has recorded several albums, with songs in Latvian, French, English, Russian and Portuguese. In 2002, she won the Eurovision Song Contest for Latvia with her song "I Wanna". Naumova was discovered by famous Latvian musician Raimonds Pauls in 1994 and after a year she performed on TV in searches for talent. She never won, but was noticed by the audience. In 1998, she performed in a concert celebrating the 100 years jubilee of George Gershwin. In March 1998 she performed on stage in concerts with famous Latvian musicians, and one of those concerts was recorded on CD. That gave her career a boost and she began to participate in several music events, television and radio shows, and give interviews for Latvian newspapers In November of 2002 she recorded two new solo albums: one in English, and one in Latvian. She presented the albums to the audience with a tour throughout Latvia.

He was selected 14 th overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. With this selection, Girgensons became the highest-drafted Latvian in NHL. In the previous year, Girgensons was selected in the second round, 28 th overall, in the 2011 Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) Junior Draft by CSKA Moscow.
