Who is a carer? “Carers provide unpaid, ongoing, care and support to family members

Who is a carer? “Carers provide unpaid, ongoing, care and support to family members and friends who have disability, a mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail aged”. Carers may be: A relative, family member (kinship), friend or a neighbour Living with or living apart from the person they are supporting In terms of NDIS the person you care for must: have a permanent or life long disability (includes psychosocial disability) be an Australian citizen or permanent resident

Does NDIS support carers and families? The aim of NDIS is to provide choice

Does NDIS support carers and families? The aim of NDIS is to provide choice and control for the person/s you care for, known as the ‘participant’ Carers may also have their own disability and be eligible for the NDIS. Is there any direct carer support under the NDIS? ……… No However there is indirect support available Can carers still access direct carer supports ……. . Yes!

R) Personal Helpers and Mentors Service (PHa. MS)

How can I be involved along with the person I care for in their NDIS plan? Carers Australia has developed a Carer Checklist to assist you in preparing for the NDIS type of care and support you currently provide for the person you care for help you consider all aspects of the person with disability’s needs useful in helping you prepare for the planning meeting and can be provided to the planner/Local Coordinator Carers Australia and Mental Health Australia have also developed a Mental Health Carer Checklist that can be used.

Workshop process 1. 2. 3. There are three questions you stay on the same table facilitators will bring the questions to you (1 A 1 B 1 C, etc. ) Tables will have ten minutes per question facilitators will encourage conversation a scribe will write down everyone's ideas At the end the three questions the table facilitators will get together for 5 minutes and detail the TOP THREE themes from your responses 4. One of the facilitators per question will read out themes 5. Themes will be collated and included along with the other ideas you shared in this session in the ‘book of proceedings’ which you will receive after the event.
