Fairy Tales (and almost all stories) Contain: A setting, characters, a problem, and a solution
The setting tells the reader the place and time the story takes place. Here are some examples:

Can you guess what story this setting is from? But, for the poor unhappy girl, there was nothing at all. No dresses, only her stepsisters' hand-me-downs. No lovely dishes, nothing but scraps. No nice rests and comfort. For she had to work hard all day, and only when evening came was she allowed to sit for a while by the fire, near the cinders.

Characters • Are the people or animals in the story. • There are usually one or two main characters in a story. Can you name some fairy tale characters?
The Problem • In the story Cinderella has several problems. What are they? • What is your favorite fairy tale? Describe the problems in it.
Solution • The solution tells us how the problem was solved. • And of course, the characters should live happily ever after….
