Copyright Definition �“The exclusive right to make copies, license, and otherwise exploit a literary, musical, or artistic work, whether printed, audio, video, etc. : works granted such right by law on or after January 1, 1978, are protected for the lifetime of the author or creator and for a period of 70 years after his or her death”(Dictionary. com online).
Authors Copyrighted Exclusive Rights � 1. The original authors can duplicate their authentic work. � 2. The authors can display their work to the public. � 3. The author can prepare existing works based off of their copyrighted work. � 4. The author can sale their copyrighted work to the public by renting it to people or lending it out to people.
The Do’s of Copyright � 1. You can use resources that are given within the public domain. � 2. If you find an intriguing quote you can use it but make sure you only quote a small amount of it and not the essence of the quote. � 3. You can use ideas and facts you find interseting. � 4. You can use material that is not subject under copyright rules.
The Don’ts of Copyright � 1. Don’t assume just because the material you are using doesn’t have a copyright message that its not copyrighted. � 2. If you use copyrighted material and take it down, don’t assume that you won’t be in trouble. � 3. Don’t assume if you can’t find a copyright owner, you can use that material. � 4. Just because you credit the author doesn’t mean that isn’t a copyright violation.
Fair Use Definition �“A legal doctrine that portions of copyrighted materials may be used without permission of the copyright owner provided the use is fair and reasonable, does not substantially impair the value of the materials, and does not curtail the profits reasonably expected by the owner” (Merriamwebster online dictionary).
Guidelines of Fair Use � 1. The intention and meaning of the work. � 2. The character of the work. � 3. The quantity of the copyrighted work you have used. � 4. The outcome that the copyrighted work has the on market.
The Do’s of Fair Use � 1. If you use a quote, make sure the quote is noticeably marked with quotation marks. Always cite the source you got the quote from. � 2. You need to only use as much of the work to make your point. � 3. You need to make an attempt and search for the copyright holder for the work you are citing.
The Don’ts of Fair Use � 1. You don’t need to cite an search engine or someone that isn’t involved as the copyright possessor. � 2. You don’t need to copy whole articles or blog posts. You can only copy whole articles and blog posts if its marked with a license allowing you that kind of use.

Examples of Copyright Infringement and Fair Use Examples � Copyright Examples: � Burning a movie that you own onto CD’s and then handing them out to your friends. � Fair Use Examples: � Making a copy of a song off of a CD which you bought onto your MP 3 player. � The quotation you used in your paper is marked with quotation marks and you cited the source of where you got it from.
