FAIR TRADE Fair Trade is a tangible contribution
FAIR TRADE Fair Trade is a tangible contribution to the fight against poverty, climate change and global economic crises.
WHY DOES FAIR TRADE MATTER? The global trading system isn’t fair for everyone! Companies demand profit and consumers want inexpensive products As a result, some people who grow food and manufacture products work in poor conditions and earn very little for their effort About 20% of the world still live on less than $1 a day More than 40% of the worlds workers earn less than $2 a day
WHAT IS FAIR TRADE? An international trading system that works to ensure higher wages and income for producers in the “South” It contributes to sustainable development by working to ensure improved working and environmental conditions and social standards
FAIR TRADE PRODUCTS IN CANADA Coffee Tea Sugar Cocoa Chocolate Sports balls Fruits Juice Spices Rice Quinoa Flowers Wine Cotton Art and crafts When you buy products with the FAIRTRADE Mark, you support farmers and workers as they work to improve their lives and their communities.
THE FAIR TRADE MARK Products with the FAIRTRADE Mark must meet international Fairtrade standards The Mark means that the Fairtrade ingredients in the product have been produced by small-scale farmer organizations/plantations that meet Fairtrade social, economic and environmental standards
FAIR TRADE GUIDELINES/STANDARDS See handout “How Does Fair Trade Help Producers? ” for details Direct trade Fair pricing Democratic and transparent organizations Protection of the environment Community development Long-term trade relationships Access to credit for producers The standards apply to both producers and traders.
FAIR TRADE MINIMUM PRICE See handout “ Fair Trade Certified Pricing and the Fair Trade Premium” there is a Fairtrade Minimum Price paid to producer associations for their product It is set to cover the cost of sustainable production for that product in that region. If the market price for that product is higher than our Minimum Price, then producers should receive the market price. FYI: Payment of the Minimum Price is regularly audited and checked by FLOCERT. This acts as a vital safety net for farmers and workers and protects them from fluctuations in the market prices of the products they grow for a living. This protection ensures they can have an assured and stable income and plan for their future. Fairtrade is the only certification scheme that offers such a unique Minimum Price protection for farmers.
FAIR TRADE PREMIUM See handout “ Fair Trade Certified Pricing and the Fair Trade Premium” the Fairtrade Premium is an additional sum of money which goes into a communal fund for workers and farmers to use to improve their social, economic and environmental conditions Producers determine what is most important to them In real terms, it means investment in schools, transport, health care, sanitation, an improved environment and better business equipment and practices.
