GUIDING BELIEFS ABOUT PD • NCSSM faculty members, as dedicated professionals, naturally seek out

GUIDING BELIEFS ABOUT PD • NCSSM faculty members, as dedicated professionals, naturally seek out professional development opportunities on our own. We deserve institutional credit for our work. • Much of the time, faculty members are best at determining our individual professional growth needs and finding opportunities to meet those needs. Autonomy and choice are essential. • NCSSM faculty members should have PD opportunities on campus with our colleagues as well as opportunities off campus with other educators. • Governance of NCSSM’s faculty-driven professional development program is shared between faculty members and administrators.

FACULTY-DRIVEN PD IN A NUTSHELL Each full-time faculty member is required to complete and report at least 12 hours of faculty-driven professional development each academic NEW This Year: Any number of PD hours from the summer year. prior to the academic year can be counted as part of the 12 hours.

WHAT “FACULTY-DRIVEN PD” IS Faculty-driven professional development is any professional development activity that YOU, as an individual faculty member, choose to do. EXAMPLES: -Taking classes or webinars -Writing articles or books -Observing other teachers -Reading articles or books -Attending talks at museums or universities Certification -Completing National Board -Attending or presenting at conferences -Attending i-Viz or PLC meetings

WHAT “FACULTY-DRIVEN PD” IS NOT Activities that you do not choose to do: •

WHAT “FACULTY-DRIVEN PD” IS NOT Activities that you do not choose to do: • Departmental PD • Administrative PD • Required readings • Curriculum development that your department requires you to do Regular activities that you do as part of your job: • Grading papers • Serving on NCSSM committees • Advising student teams and clubs • Hosting speakers for students or taking students on field trips

WHAT ARE I-VIZ SESSIONS? • i-Viz sessions are 75 -minute or 3 -hour sessions on particular topics proposed and facilitated by NCSSM staff and faculty members. • Look in your email inbox throughout the year for messages about opportunities to sign up to facilitate or attend i-Viz sessions. • Keeping i-Viz sessions going is a community effort!

WHAT IS A PLC? • A professional learning community (PLC) is a small faculty working group that meets periodically to support the professional growth of its members in a specific way. • Be on the lookout for an announcement about our PLC kickoff in the weeks ahead. • Consider forming a PLC with some of your colleagues or coming out to the PLC kickoff to shop around.

Submit our PD goals in writing to our Academic Deans when we submit our other yearly goals form. 3. Complete faculty-driven PD activities and report at least 12 PD hours on the “ 2018 -2019 NCSSM Faculty-Driven Professional Development Reporting Form, ” which can be found on the Faculty Professional Growth Canvas page. 4. Consider sharing photos and summaries of your PD activities in Daily Unicorn so that the community can know what you’re doing.
