Information • Physical entity e. g. book, posters, documents etc. . • Facts, advise, opinions (printed, electronic, visual, audio, oral) • Organized form of data. • Data put in a meaningful form • Processed/analyzed data • Result of processing, gathering, manipulation and organizing data in way that adds to knowledge of the receiver.
Needs • Defined as being “a cognitive representation of a future goal that is desired”. • It can also be defined as a subjective experience that occurs only in the mind of the person in need and consequently is not accessible to the observer. • A need can be discovered by deduction from behavior or through the reports of a person in need.
Types of needs • Expressed – One knows his/her needs and can even inform others about them • Unexpressed – One is aware about his/her needs but doesn’t want to inform others about them. • Delitescent/Dormant needs – One is unaware of what he/she wants (unaware of need) • A need can be specific/time bound or immediate/deferred
Other types of needs: • The "basic needs" approach in development discourse focuses on the measurement of poverty with a view to its elimination in the shortest amount of time. • One of the major approaches to the measurement of poverty, the approach attempts to define the absolute minimum necessary for subsistence, usually in terms of consumption goods; the poverty lineis then defined as the amount of income required to satisfy those needs. • Related approaches, focus on 'capabilities' rather than consumption. As a result, emphasis is placed only on the minimum level of consumption of 'basic needs' such as food, water, shelter, sanitation, healthcare, and education.
Information needs • The ‘information’ and ‘need’ in ‘information need’ are inseparable interconnection. • Needs and interests that call for information. • Represents the gap in the current knowledge of the User. • Information needs consist of determining ones needs of information and information seeking
Identification of information needs • Conducting research • Media(print and electronic, visual, oral and audio) • Conferences/meetings/workshops/trainings
Do information needs change or remain static • Range of information needs available (accessible), the more information is available the more the information needs of users • Social/economical/political/legal systems surrounding the Users • Uses of which information would/can be put to use • Ones background/motivation/professional orientation and other individual characteristics of the User • Consequences of information needs
Do information needs change or remain static • • • Availability of facilities Hierarchical position of individuals Motivation factors for information needs Need to take a decision Need to seek new ideas Need to validate the correct ones Need to make professional contributions Need to establish priority for discovery etc. Work activity Discipline/ Field / Area of interest
Information needs of different categories • • • Doctors Information on patients history Research being conducted Modern treatment methods Government health plans and policies
