Aims Define Extrinsic and Intrinsic factors. Classify factors into these categories. Understand how this relates to performance analysis in sport. Look at methods of controlling these factors.

Categories Intrinsic ‘factors that are controlled from within. ’ In sporting terms your own personal previous training. Extrinsic: ‘influences or factors that are placed upon you from external sources. ’ In sporting terms temperature or time of day.

Why do these need to be considered? Are the results of analysis always enough?

Why do these need to be considered? Are the results of analysis always enough? Do they always tell the right story regarding performance? Should we always believe the results? For example the temperature is 40 degrees, a hockey player only covers half of the distance during the game as pervious data shows they are capable of. Does this mean he/she has had a bad game? How should we use the results?

Intrinsic List as many intrinsic factors that may affect sporting performance as you can.

Intrinsic List as many intrinsic factors that may affect sporting performance as you can. Think of what sports/events the factors may affect more? Are there any factors which will affect performance more than others?

Age The graph shows the how old the world champion boxers are. This is for all weights and divisions. majority of champions are within the age range of 26 -29 years. Why is this? Does the data affect analysis?

Controlling the Factors The specific factor and it’s category can determine the extent to which the athlete and coach can control the affects of that factor. What methods could be used with the opposite factors? Diet Previous training Time of Day Group cohesion Temperature Confidence Altitude Age

Temperature & Altitude In the UK and the temperature rarely reaches extremes and the altitude will be relatively constant. If athletes perform or choose to train abroad they may encounter hotter or cooler temperatures as well as altitude which will need to be considered. Pre event training camps, acclimatisation chambers, ice vests for training may be used.

Time of Day The time of day can have a major effect on performance

Time of Day The time of day can have a major effect on performance and especially when an athlete may suffer jet lag from crossing time zones, the time of day for training and performance should be considered. An example of this is the British Olympic Squad when they travelled to the Beijing Olympics, they attended a pre event training camp/base to adjust their body clocks 1 week before the games. What would have happened if they didn’t?

Summary It is possible to measure and advise on many intrinsic and extrinsic factors

Summary It is possible to measure and advise on many intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing performance. Difference – intrinsic can sometimes be self controlled – vital for performance levels Extrinsic cant always be controlled – this must be remembered when analysing games and data.
