FACEBOOK DEBUNKING THE PEGAN DIET Jayden Cartelli Exercise Prescription Online – Zoom Meeting 2 November 5 th, 2019
WHAT IS THE ‘PEGAN’ DIET? • The Pegan diet is a diet that consists of the basic principles of veganism, as well as paleo – the idealism behind this diet is that the consumer is only eating a plant-based diet, as well as some selective meat and fish, but avoid dairy products, eggs, grains, legumes, and processed, sugary foods (as stated by Good Housekeeping, 2019).
WHAT CAN YOU EAT ON THIS DIET? • Within the interview on Facebook, the interviewer was pressuring the Doctor Brian Murphy into believing that the vegetables preferred for a given plate on this diet (over seventy-five percent of a given plate) is a “greeny green, ” while avoiding starch. Ultimately, Doctor Murphy called the entire diet a crock on this evidence alone because, not only are all vegetables starchy, but so are the recommended nuts and seeds, as well as the heavy amounts of ‘healthy’ fats seen in fish, the given oils that are allowed within the diet itself, and ultimately is just a farce. It is too complicated (in Doctor Murphy’s opinion) to follow two combined diets, especially these two, when considering that the diet wants it’s users to cut out all starchy vegetables (when all vegetables are starch and carbohydrate based).
WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF THE PEGAN DIET? • When I was researching this diet, I felt a little perplexed by the idea behind it – avoiding animal products while still eating meat for some reason did not really resonate with me. • “While the two styles contradict each other in some ways, the main tenant that peganism borrows from both is a focus on real, whole foods, ” (Good Housekeeping, 2019). • “The strong emphasis on fruit and vegetable intake is perhaps its best trait. Fruits and vegetables are some of the most nutritionally diverse foods. They’re full of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds known to prevent disease and reduce both oxidative stress and inflammation, ” (Hill, 2019).
DOWNFALLS TO THE PEGAN DIET: • The Pegan diet not only is incredibly selective and/or restrictive, but it is also incredibly contradictory of itself. • Avoiding dairy and gluten when not having an allergy to either is not necessary to one’s normal diet. • Eliminating large food groups can lead to a lack of nutrition, especially if those nutrients are not being replaced steadily. • Many of these foods can be inaccessible • Farm-raised, grass-fed meat • Organic fruit and vegetables
IS THERE ANY PROOF OF THE PEGAN DIET WORKING? • Throughout my research, I could not find any significant ground work on the claim that this diet has any true benefits. All I could find while researching was the fad diet websites encouraging those browsing to give this diet a try (and seasonally, it was perfect when this diet gained the traction it did – it was the new year).
