Objectives of Fabric Inspection: ØTo assure either the quality of fabric fulfill the expected requirements. ØTo detect the fabric defects and nonconformance at early stage. ØTo satisfy customer.
Advantages of fabric inspection: ØImprove product quality ØMinimize waste ØReduce the cost ØAvoid short shipment and order cancellation ØIncrease Productivity
Grading Systems: There are different types of grading systems that are used in industry for fabric inspection. A system is selected by mutual acceptance of buyer and supplier. Some of the available grading systems are § 4 Point System § 10 Point System §Graniteville 78 System § 6 Point System §Dallas System
4 Point System: Important Point to be considered during inspection: ØDefect must be measured lengthwise ØMaximum penalty points per yard are four. ØDefects within 12" on selvedge not considered. ØAcceptance level up to 40 points/100 sq yard. ØRejection will occur above 40 points/100 sq yard. ØDefect must be marked properly by using stickers.
Defect Classification by using four point system: Size of Defect Penalty 3 inches or less 1 Point Over 3, but not over 6 inches 2 Points Over 6, but not over 9 inches 3 Points Over 9 inches 4 Points
10 Point System: ØIt is earliest inspection system and is designed to identify defects and to assign each defect a value based on severity of defect. ØGrading is designed to apply to every imperfection according to size regardless of type. ØNo one yard should be penalized more than 10 points. ØA combination of both warp and weft defects when occurring in one yarn should not be penalized more than 10 points. ØAny warp or weft defect occurring repeatedly throughout the entire piece makes it second grade fabric.
Defect Classification by using 10 point system: 10 point system is mainly used for woven fabrics. Warp Defects: Size of defect Penalty Up to 1 inch 1 point 1 -5 inch 3 point 5 -10 inch 5 point 10 -36 inch 10 point
Weft Defects: Size of defect Penalty Up to 1 inch 1 point 1 -5 inch 3 point 5 inch to half width 5 point Full width 10 point
First Quality: A piece is graded as first quality if the total quality points does not exceed the total yardage of piece e. g. 100 yard piece got 70 penalty points. Second Quality: Fabric is considered second quality it total penalty points exceed total yardage of fabric.
