FABRIC FINISHES Definition: A fabric finish is an additional process to improve the appearance, performance, wear or handle of a fabric
Reasons for adding a Finish… ◦ TASK: Make a list of any reasons you can think of to add a finish • To improve the safety of a product • To change or improve the way it looks • To make it easier to care for or launder • To improve how the fabric feels • To make it last longer • To change the way it behaves in certain environments
There are two main types of finishes: ◦ Mechanical finishes – use dry processes that are applied physically without the use of water or chemicals. They are used to modify the fabric surface. ◦ Chemical finishes – are wet processes that use chemicals and heat, and may also use water. Chemical finishes change the fibre structure or fabric properties in order to improve their characteristics.
