MATERIALS TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR SPEECH • Writing a speech is different in a few ways from writing an essay • Students have been learning at Eye Level the composition process of essay writing but not speech writing • This document explains the key differences between the two • It provides suggestions and tips for the participants to consider when writing and revising their speeches

MATERIALS REHEARSAL GUIDELINES • Public speaking is not an easy task for many • This guide serves to explain the importance of rehearsing prior to the event in front of someone • It also explains what to think about when reciting the speech • Body language • Intonation • Pronunciation and Pacing • Time limits/expectations

MATERIALS JUDGING GUIDE • This document will provide a system by which you can grade and critique the participants’ speeches • It will focus on points that were explained to students in their Rehearsal Guide (timing, body language, pronunciation, pacing…) • Select your judges well in advance and let them know the expectations of the role (could be yourself, instructors, city council representatives, volunteer parents, etc. ) • To save time during the contest, have the judges mark the sections on the judging sheet during the speech, but have someone else tally the points
