Introduction • It’s a medical procedure of washing out of the conjunctival sac with a stream of liquid. This is use to clean out foreign objects that gets into the eye causing irritation.
DEFINITION It is the washing of the conjunctival sac by a stream of liquid
PURPOSES • To treat inflammatory process of conjunctiva • To apply medication for an antiseptic effect • To remove foreign bodies or irritating chemicals fallen into the eye • To apply heat or cold to the eye • To prepare for eye surgery
SOLUTIONS USED o o o Plain water Normal saline Boric acid 2% Acriflavin 1% Silver nitrate 1% Mercurochrome 1%
EQUIPMENTS • Warm irrigation solution prescribed 200 to 500 ml • Sterile basin • Aseptic or small bulb syringe or plastic squeeze bottle • Disposable gloves • Mackintosh and towel • I. V stand • Sterile cotton balls and kidney tray
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS q Maintain sterile technique q Wash hand thoroughly q Treat eye separately q Place the head tilted to the effected side q Carefully clean the eye lids before irrigation starts q Separate the eye lids very gently using the thumb and the fore fingers of the left hand q Never touch the eye with an irrigator
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS q Treat the least infected eye first q Never direct forceful streams of solution into the eye q Irrigation are usually given at body temperature q Restrict the movements of the patient when he is likely to uncooperative q Eye irrigation are carried out in good light q Direct the flow of fluid from the inner canthus to the outer canthus q If any medications are to be instilled. it is done immediately after the eye irrigation
Preliminary Assessment Ø Check the name, bed number and identification of the patient Ø Check the diagnosis and the purpose for eye irrigation Ø Check the doctor’s order for specific instruction Ø Assess the patient’s abilities and limitation Ø Assess the patient’s mental state Ø Assess the need for any restraints Ø Check the articles
PROCEDURE v Clean the eye lids and eye lashes using the wet swabs v Gently retract eye lids v Ask the client to look up while irrigating the inner part of the lower lid, ask the client to look down while irrigating the upper lid v Hold solution-filled bulb, dropper or tubing approximately 1 inch(2. 5 cm)from the irrigating the inner part of the lower eye lid
PROCEDURE v Reinforce the importance of the procedure v Allow client to blink periodically v Continue for prescribed volume and time until secretions have been cleared v Blot excess moisture from eye lid and face v Dispose of soiled supplies v Remove gloves and perform hand hygiene
After care § Observe for verbal and non verbal signs of anxiety during the procedure § Assess client’s comfort level § Inspect eye for reaction to light, accommodation or movement § Record and document the procedure in nurses record.
Summary Today we discussed about meaning, purposes, solutions used, preliminary assessment and procedure of eye irrigation.
Conclusion • Nurses play an important role in eye irrigation procedure they should know the solutions used and steps involved in eye irrigation procedure.
