Extreme Heat Facts Highest deaths per year out of all weather-related hazards Has to be 2 to 3 days of high heat and humidity above 90 degrees Evaporation is slowed Hard to maintain normal body temperature Can occur quickly and without warning It’s important to drink a lot of water, stay out of the sun, use a fan or air conditioning, take a cold shower, and avoid physical activity • A heat wave is strong and deadly • Humans have caused global warming and that has made extreme heat events happen more often and happen for longer • • •
Examples
House Structure Damage A house structure can be damaged by fire. With extreme heat and humidity, it is more possible that something is going to catch on fire and that fire will be hard to put out because of the heat and humidity. If there is a structure (house, building, shed) fire or wildfire nearby it can travel to the house. The fire can damage the roof siding windows doors wires and insulation.
Example
How To Protect House from Fire Damage • Garage will have a metal door. • Front door will have a wooden front (to look nice) and then behind it, it will be metal. • The attic window is made of metal bars. • The roof is made of nonflammable asphalt shingles. • An underground safety hatch with a little door that leads to a blueberry bush (in case you are hungry during a fire). • A chimney made out of bricks. • Windows that are double-paned and tempered (stronger than normal glass) glass. • The house will be made out of bricks
