EXERCISE Select one of the following phrases and, working in groups or individually, create expressive text to enhance its meaning. “I am for an art that unfolds like a map; that you can kiss, like a pet dog. Which expands and squeaks, like an accordion. ” Claus Oldenberg, I am for an Art, 1961 “Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work, and theft, will be authentic. ” Jim Jarmusch, The Golden Rules of Filmmaking, 2002 “I am at war with my time, with history, with authority that resides in fixed and frightened forms. ” Lebbeus Woods, Manifesto, 1993 “Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. ” Jim Jarmusch, The Golden Rules of Filmmaking, 2002 “Everything you can imagine is real. ” Pablo Picasso “You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star. ” Friedrich Nietzsche “Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. ” Jim Jarmusch, The Golden Rules of Filmmaking, 2002

EXERCISE Instructions • Choose 2 -3 key words from the phrase and use expressive

EXERCISE Instructions • Choose 2 -3 key words from the phrase and use expressive text to enhance or amplify the meaning of those words within the overall sentiment of the phrase. • You can do the exercise on a large sheet of cartridge paper, or you can blutac your work directly to a blank area of wall if available. You can use several pieces of paper that you combine together. • Use any materials or media that you can access at home: glue, scissors, paint, ink, pencil, dye, foodstuffs, cut out paper, images from newspapers or magazines, fabric off-cuts, discarded materials or objects, string, glitter, pastel, crayons, brushes, twigs, leaves or flowers from the garden… • Consider the position on the page/wall, scale, size, shape, line, colour, tone and texture, font. • Recombine the words you have enhanced with the rest of the text in the phrase to create a complete sentence. • Photograph your work and consider how the expressive qualities of your words and phrases are enhanced by your approach, including media choice, position on the page/wall, scale, dynamics and legibility.
