What does « expository » mean ? • « Expository » means to explain.

What does « expository » mean ? • « Expository » means to explain. • Expository writing explains ideas so that readers can understand them. • Expository writing does not tell a story. • Expository writing does not persuade a reader but only gives facts and reasons. • Expository writing can also give the steps of a process. However, students SHOULD NOT just list the steps but should discuss each step and give examples of what to expect if errors are made.

3 types of expository writing Expository writing can be divided into 3 categories :

Ex: explain how to solve a problem, bake a cake, etc. 2) What happened Explain main events in a historical or chronological order. Ex: The attack of Pearl Harbour, The War of Independance 3) What is it Explain the features of a subject. Ex : What is a tsunami ? (Describe the how it is created, its destructional powers, how it arises, etc. )

What are the parts of an expository essay ? Introduction • Name the topic and have an attention-grabbing statement or information. Body • Explain the steps in the process : write the instructions or information in a logical order, one step at a time. • Use transition words such as first, next, then, when, after, and finally to indicate order of steps. • Be sure to include all the steps, and explain each one clearly so the reader or listener will be able to picture it. Conclusion • Give final thoughts about the topic.
