What is it? § The purpose of an expository essay is to explain something

What is it? § The purpose of an expository essay is to explain something to the reader based on a prompt. § Most expository essays are at least 5 paragraphs long and contain examples from text and/or scenarios that help explain the prompt to the reader. § Expository essays should never begin with a question, but can begin with a definition or a statement of fact.

The Rules for Writing Expository Essays § 1. DO NOT use I, ME, MINE, YOU anywhere in your essay. § 2. DO NOT open with a question! § 3. STATE your thesis clearly! (This is your 3 points in one sentence and is usually found at the end of your introduction – see example. ) § 4. USE your VOCABULARY!!!!! Discuss, analyze, evaluate are great words to describe what you are going to do in your essay.

Should be about 3 -4 sentences with a hook. 1 st point from thesis explained in detail. 2 nd point from thesis explained in detail. 3 rd point from thesis explained in detail. Conclusion – restate your thesis (3 main points) and wrap it up. Should be 3 -4 sentences long. Should be 5 -8 sentences long and should include examples.
