Jude Who was he? “Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James” Is this a cryptic way of saying he was a half brother of Jesus? Was he an apostle?
Jude When? Assuming genuinely written by Jude… Probably written between 40 AD and 90 AD Most scholars would probably be comfortable with a date around AD 66
Jude Why? To encourage Christians to stand firm in their faith. To alert them of the dangers of the doctrine and lifestyle of false teachers.
Jude Style. A very rushed style. Very passionate and combative. However also full of love and compassion with a beautiful doxology to finish.
Jude 2 Peter - similarities. There a number of similarities between Jude and 2 Peter. Possibly shared source but either one could have used the other as a source.
Jude Summary: • An encyclical letter – i. e. not addressed to a specific church or person. • An impassioned and combative rebuke of false teaching. • Encourages Christians to stand firm in their faith. • Finishes with, arguably, the best doxology in the Bible.
