What is the Electromagnetic Spectrum? • Electromagnetic Spectrum- energy transferred through space by electromagnetic waves • Visible light- the light you can see • Visible light is just one of the many types of E. R. (electromagnetic radiation) • Many objects give off radiation that you can’t see
Electromagnetic Spectrum
Spectrum Characteristics • Wavelength- the distance between the crest of one wave and the crest of the next wave • Visible light has a short wavelength • Frequency- the number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time • Longest wavelengths have lowest frequency and shortest wavelength have highest frequency

Spectrum Characteristics • If you shine a white light through a prism, the light will spread to make different colors with different wavelengths • Spectrum- the range of wavelengths of electromagnetic waves • Visible Spectrum is made of colors, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet
Visible Light
Visible from Invisible
Spectrum Characteristics • The electromagnetic spectrum includes the entire range of radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and gamma rays
Uses and Hazards • Different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum have a variety of uses • Look at the table on page 234 to see some of the uses and hazards of using these waves
What are telescopes and How do They Work? • Telescopes work better than your eyes because the light from stars spreads out as it moves through space and your eyes are too small to gather most of the light from the stars • Telescopes are instruments that collect and focus light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation
Optical Telescopes • A telescope that uses lenses and mirrors to collect and focus visible light is called an optical telescope • Two major types: • Refracting • reflecting
Refracting Telescope • Refracting telescope- a telescope that uses convex lenses to gather information and focus light • Convex lens is a piece of glass that is curved • It has two convex lenses (one at each end)
Reflecting Telescope • 1668 Isaac Newton built the first reflecting telescope • Reflecting telescope- uses a curved mirror to collect and focus light • Focuses a large amount of light into a small area
Other Telescopes • Telescopes are usually located in observatories • Observatory is a building that contains many telescopes • Read page 236
How are Planetary Images and Satellite Photographs Made? • Planetary images and satellite photographs are made by collecting visible light and other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum • Information is taken from the spectrum and used to create images and photographs
Satellite Photographs • Some satellites take photographs of Earth’s surface • Satellite photographs- pictures of the surface based on computer data • Electronic devices collect computer data about the land surface • Pixel- one bit of a digitized image, often appearing as a small square or dot • Each pixel represents some information about a small par of earth’s surface
Planetary Images • Images of planets help scientists understand how the solar system developed • Scientists used to draw what they saw through the telescope before cameras were invented or strong enough to get images of the planets • Space probes help us now get very good images of the planets as they an get very close
Planetary Images • Some probes and telescopes collect some forms of electromagnetic waves other than visible light • The information is used to create images that show structures that are otherwise not visible • Planetary image- a picture of a planet taken in visible light or in another format of electromagnetic radiation.
Space Exploration and Florida Chapter 6 Lesson 5 Page 240
How Has the Space Program Affected Florida? • Space exploration has been tied to FL even before NASA was created • The space program has been a boon to FL’s economy. It employs Florida’s workers, uses Fl businesses, and promotes tourism to the state. The space program has also encouraged interest in space exploration and technology
Economic Impact • In 1958 President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act with established NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) • Later they created Launch Operations Center, which is now known as Kennedy Space Center • Spaceport- a site for launching or receiving spacecraft
Economic Impact • The spaceport has been the launching site for all American manned missions • Hundreds of scientific spacecraft have been launched • Kennedy Space Center is the primary launch site • Employs 15, 000 people and puts lots of money back into the area • $2 billion was put into the economy by KSS
Cultural Impact • Before 1950 most of FL was farmland • The space program has made FL into a technological center which has improved the states educational system and cultural institutions • Space Coast- name given to the area where NASA’s Kennedy Space Center is located
Cultural Impact • Space Coast includes numerous attractions related to the space program • It has rides, exhibits, models, and much more! • Many other attractions moved to the are because of the development of the area due to the space program • Read page 243
