What is a National Wildlife Refuge? • Managed by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service – there are over 560 across the country! • Established to protect migratory birds, fish, and threatened and endangered species • Don Edwards protects over 280 species of birds and two endangered species: the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse and California Ridgway’s Rail • National Wildlife Refuges protect species by managing habitats • Healthy habitats provide species with everything they need to survive: food, water, shelter, and space!
Mudflats The habitat that is only visible at low tide! When water exits the slough and tidal marsh, the mud beneath is exposed. Shorebirds find lots of food here. California Ridgway’s Rail Clams Fun Fact: Snails, clams, mussels, and worms (often referred to as “Mud Creatures”) are a yummy food source for shorebirds and ducks!
