What is a National Wildlife Refuge? • Managed by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service – there are over 560 across the country! • Established to protect migratory birds, fish, and threatened and endangered species • Don Edwards protects over 280 species of birds and two endangered species: the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse and California Ridgway’s Rail • National Wildlife Refuges protect species by managing habitats • Healthy habitats provide species with everything they need to survive: food, water, shelter, and space!
Slough Fun Fact: The water you use inside your house gets treated at the wastewater treatment facility and then discharged into the Mallard Slough at the Refuge in Alviso. “Slough” rhymes with “You” This habitat is brackish, meaning it is a mix of fresh and salt water. Sloughs are another transitional habitat, connecting the bay with creeks and rivers. Osprey California Gull Black-crowned Night Heron Tule Striped Bass
