Premise of CEMHD • Focus on Minorities and underserved populations in Smaller Cities of Upstate New York • Most research on the causes of health disparities has focused on populations in large cities and programs to reduce disparities characteristically are launched in large cities. • Suspect that problems found in large cities differ from those in the smaller ones; the appropriate solutions would differ as well. • However, little is known about the distinct causes of poorer health among minorities in smaller cities, and how to eliminate those factors thereby improving health and reducing disparities.

Brief History of CEMHD • 2004 September: Award of $1. 25 over 3 yrs. through NCMHD’s EXPORT program (EXcellence in Partnerships for Community Outreach, Research on Health Disparities and Training). • 2005: UAlbany establishes research center, “Center for the Elimination of Minority Health Disparities. ” • 2009 May: Award of P-20 funding for “Exploratory Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities in Smaller Cities” of $6, 820, 730 through NIMHD’s Centers of Excellence program. • 2016 April : NIH awards S-21 Endowment award “The Endowment for Community-Based Health Disparities Research and Training” $10, 000 over 5 years. • 2016 August: P-20 Co. E ends after 3 years of no-cost extensions.
