Explicit Instruction 1 Activity Icebreaker v Find the

Explicit Instruction 1

Activity: Icebreaker v Find the comprehension strategy at your table. v Discuss how you would explicitly teach the strategy. v Write down your responses on the chart paper at your table. v After you share whole group, affix the charts to the wall. 2

Explicit instruction is to overtly teach step through teacher modeling and many examples. Most children do NOT learn to read or spell “naturally” but instead learn from instruction 3

Why Teach Explicitly? Brain research indicates that when a student learns something incorrectly it takes 60 -70 repetitions to break the inaccurately learned behavior. 4

The purpose of teaching explicitly is to: v Set a purpose for instruction v Identify the important details or concepts v Model expected outcome of instruction v Make connections to previously-learned material 5

Activity: Turn and Talk v. List the phases of explicitness v. Be prepared to share your answers 6

Five Phases of Explicitness: 1. 2. 3. 4. Introduction or Focus Model ( I Do) Shared Learning ( We Do) Independent Learning( You Do) 5. Culminating Activity 7

Introduction The role of the teacher is to: v Focus students attention before beginning instruction v Activate or build background knowledge v Build interest and motivation 8

Model( I Do) The role of the teacher is to: v Provide a model v Explicitly demonstrate expected procedure v “Think aloud” the process 9

Collaborate (We Do) The role of the teacher is to: v Guide students with skill development v Scaffold students attempts v Re-teach as needed 10

Independent Practice (You Do) The role of the teacher is to: v Assess and evaluate v Provide support as needed v Provide immediate corrective feedback v Go back to “I Do” or “We Do” for clarification 11

Special note to participants It may be necessary to move between the “we do” and “you do” several times until you are confident that the student has mastered the concept and can complete the skill without providing additional support. 12

Culminating Activity The role of the teacher is to: v Provide closure v Next steps v Encouragement 13

Activity: Video Clips v Please turn to your “Video Notes” handout v As you watch the clips jot down remarks v Look for phases of explicitness 14

Activity: Revisit Comprehension Strategies from Icebreaker v How will you re-teach this strategy using all five phases of explicit instruction? v Use the Explicit Instruction template to jot down y our ideas. 15

Activity: Think and Assess v Are the five components of explicit instruction present during your lessons? v Which one's do you use most frequently? v Which one will you include after today's workshop? 16

v. Please complete your commitment and evaluation cards. v. Place them on the front table. Thank You! 17
